Regardless of the size of the data center,
the right mix of IT, power and cooling equipment, and how that equipment is
integrated into the facilities, is key to maximizing efficiency and providing
the flexibility to expand as needed. Successful integration of equipment into
data centers depends on finding the right companies with site
preparation, design, construction
and management
expertise. Those organizations also need to be able to quickly turn the
new facilities over to customers and help manage the transition.
Such designers and builders are often the unsung heroes of the data center. But not in CRN, as noted in the CRN 2015 Top Data Center Designers and Builders list. |

Aquatherm: High Performance, Long-Lasting, and Environmentally Friendly Pipes and Fittings
Friday, January 30, 2015 – by Pete Sacco
Ideally hydronic pipe should not be affected by the fluid it is carrying, and the fluid should not be affected by the pipe. Sadly, many HVAC system use a compromised material called carbon steel for hydronic piping. Water oxidizes steel, which causes pitting, scale build-up, and eventually leads to failure of the pipe. These effects are mitigated through the use of closed systems where possible, chemical treatment, PH-treatment, etc. Still, metal pipes produce rust which gums up valves, clogs strainers, and accumulates in low velocity areas.
Wonder if you did not have to compromise? Wonder if an ideal piping material was available… an economically feasible material that required no maintenance? Wonder no longer. Consider Aquatherm.
- Does not rust
- Provides a lower installed cost compared to other welded or soldered system
- Has the lowest friction loss of any pipe on the market
- Does not require chemical treatment
- Does not require an open flame, glues, or chemicals to fuse it together; It uses heat fusion to bond
- Limit liability of theft on job sites (it has no scrap value, unlike copper which is often stolen from job sites)
- Requires less external insulation (due to R-value~1)
- Resist condensation if left exposed
- Mitigates sound transmission and physical vibrations
- Can be directly buried underground
- Will not burst if water freezes within it (above –20F)
- Forms a monolithic piping system when assembled (no gaskets, solder, weld slag, glue, etc.)
- Approved for HVAC, domestic water, sprinkler systems, irrigation, chemical drains, and food grade applications
- Available in pipe sizes ranging from 3/8” up to 24” diameter
- Proven 40+ year track record of installation around the world

Is it Time to Move or Colocate your Data Center? PTS' Relocation Services Can Help
Thursday, January 22, 2015 – by Pete Sacco
So you've made the decision to relocate your data center operations to a new facility. Perhaps you are moving the operations to a data center colocation facility because it was going to be too expensive to upgrade your in-house data center facility, or perhaps your organization prefers an operational expense financial model over spending capital expenditures (cash) today. Or maybe your company is simply relocating its corporate headquarters, including the computer room.
Regardless, you will have a lot of work ahead of you, and PTS’ data center experts can help. PTS’ Relocation Services provide comprehensive site selection, planning, project management, and implementation services for clients in need of data center or computer room migration, whether due to business changes, growth, changes in IT needs or requirements, business relocation, or other strategic business reasons.

Zerto’s award winning hypervisor-based replication software enables
alignment of your Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery (BCDR)
plan with your IT strategy. By using hypervisor-based data replication,
you can reduce DR complexity and hardware costs and still protect your
mission-critical virtualized applications.
-
Zerto Replication for VMware Zerto’s replication for VMware enables automated data recovery, failover
and failback and lets you select any VM in VMware’s vCenter. It’s that
simple – no storage configuration necessary, no agent installation on
guest required.
-
Zerto Recovery for Hyper-V
Zerto Virtual Replication, the industry’s first hypervisor-based
replication solution for VMware environments, is now available for
Microsoft Hyper-V. Purpose-built for production workloads and deployed
on a virtual infrastructure, Zerto Virtual Replication is the only
technology that combines near-continuous replication with block-level,
application-consistent data protection across hosts and storage.

Packet Power: Turn Basic PDUs into "Smart PDUs" ...in Minutes
Tuesday, December 02, 2014 – by Pete Sacco
Upgrading your standard un-metered PDU to a fully metered PDU doesn’t have to mean going to the expense of purchasing a new smart PDU along with the costs of adding network cable drops and a massive integration effort with a monitoring program. Packet Power “Smart Cables” simplify the process
with the entire solution often costing less than most metered PDUs and can be implemented quickly and easily.
What is a "Smart Cable"?
Smart Cables are standard power cables with low profile embedded wireless network power monitors.
- Provide high accuracy measurements from current (A) to energy usage (kWh)
- Fail safe design that can never interrupt the current path
- Available in any plug type from 10-63 Amps and certified for use in most countries
Installing is easy as "1-2-3"...
Cost-Effective
Solution: Less Expensive than Metered PDUs without Compromise
Deploying
a Smart Cable network is more affordable than you may think.
Adding a Smart Cable to your standard PDU often costs far
less than many metered PDUs while providing all the functionality.
Looking at the total cost of ownership, the Smart Cable
scenario becomes more attractive as it has a single IP address and
network drop per hundreds of PDUs eliminating the costs of network
cables and maintaining a fleet of IP addresses.
Also there are no network cable drops needed for Smart
Cables.
Monitoring also becomes much more affordable as there are
no commission or programming costs associated with the Packet Power
monitoring solution.
Even when using the EMX monitoring portal, licensing fees
are a fraction of that of conventional systems, or non-existent when
only using the SNMP or ModBus data.

Rackstuds: The Simpler, Faster, Safer Cage Nut Replacement
Thursday, November 06, 2014 – by Pete Sacco
Rackstuds™ are the revolutionary replacement for cage nuts which are used to mount IT, Pro A/V, Security, and Telecommunications equipment in 19” racks.
Unlike cage nuts, Rackstuds™ go in from the front which greatly simplifies their installation. Cage nuts can be quite tricky to get in, especially when the rack starts to get populated or the rack is in situ with the side panels installed. Rackstuds™ can be installed in seconds and are just as easy to remove and reuse. They’re also tool free.
Visit our Rackstuds Product Page for more information.

Taneja Group Field Report: Massively Scalable, Intrinsically Simple: Tintri’s Low TCO For The Virtualized Data Center
Friday, October 17, 2014 – by Pete Sacco
Fast-growing
virtualized environments present a thorny storage challenge to IT.
Whether mission-critical applications with demanding SLAs, VDI rollouts
with boot storms, or deploying a private cloud for large dev & test
environments: delivering virtualized environments and cloud deployments
using traditional storage can stall or break a virtualization project.
Flash technology is certainly part of the solution to performance challenges posed by virtualized workloads, but can be prohibitively expensive to broadly implement across the environment. Although flash can be deployed in a number of targeted ways and placed in the infrastructure, the more it is tied down to specific hosts and workloads, the less benefit it provides to the overall production environment. This in turn causes more management overhead.
Taneja Group ran Tintri VMstore storage through their hands-on validation lab and documented significant large factors of improvement over traditional storage. Those factors accrue through Tintri’s cost-effective acquisition, simplicity and ease of deployment and data migration, effective high performance and availability and smooth expansion over time. This Field Report validates their impressive lab findings: Tintri’s approach provides significantly lower TCO than traditional storage solutions.
